PDA

Personal digital assistant

The first personal digital assistant is considered to be the Psion Organiser, although the term personal digital assistant wasn't used then. GO Corp. was also pioneering in the field. The term was first used on January 7, 1992 by Apple Computer CEO John Sculley at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, referring to the Apple Newton. PDAs are sometimes referred to as Palms, Palm Pilot or Palm Tops.

The Microwriter AgendA, a spinoff of the chording-keyboard based writing instrument endorsed by Douglas Adams, may predate that.

Shortcomings

Perhaps, more than any other computer devices, the PDA lacks the fully-blown infrastructure of a Wireless Broadband network. This could be offered in future by WiMax. Nowadays prices of laptops are coming down. Though somewhat bigger in size, laptops have better visibility and are more powerful. However, the OQO Model 2 has been released as an IBM-PC compatible PDA with a USB port so that people can play computer games from ubiquitous operating systems such as Windows XP and connect typical PC peripherals.
